Working in The Word - Bible Art Journaling

I have been working in my journaling Bible this week.  I have never worked in God's word so much. This has truly helped me to have a much richer, closer relationship with God and His word than I have ever had before.  I read the verses that I am illustrating several times to find the thing that might speak to me and sparks my creative imagination.  I remember what I've read because I am a visual learner and as I draw, paint or whatever I am doing to make the verse come alive to me I am repeating it to myself.  Sometimes I remember a verse that I have heard at Church services but don't remember where in the Bible it is found.  So I search until I find it.  This leads to a lot of reading that I would not have normally done.  This whole process is such a blessing to me.  If you have never considered it please do.  If the whole idea of drawing or painting in your Bible seems like sacrilege to you I respect that.  For me though, it is a whole new way to worship with the truth and understanding that God has asked us to do.

There is so much inspiration on Pinterest as well as the Bible Journaling Community on Facebook.

I saw a post on one of those two groups that was similar but this is my interpretation of Proverbs 16:24.

I found a link in Pinterest to Joanne Fink's website.  I was immediately taken with her Zenspirations illustrations.  To me they looked like visual jewelry on a page.  I didn't see why you couldn't use it to illustrate a verse and I found just the right one last night, 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-17.  I think this verse is such a happy verse and the Zenspiration drawing makes me feel happy.  Once you start one of these they are hard to complete.  You just want to keep going but you eventually run out of room.

And of course I completed the Bible Art Journaling Challenge from Rebekah Jones for week 15.  This week she challenged us to make a mixed media tag to use as a tip-in to our jounaling Bibles.  I used most of the techniques she showed us in the video but I didn't have all the same art supplies so I used what I have that was close.  I love the way it came out but the picture does not do it justice.  You can really see how shiny the background really is.  I had this stamp of a pocket watch and I don't think I ever used it and I really can't even remember why I bought it in the first place.  But glad I finally got to use it.
As you can see I also illustrated the same thing on the page of my Bible.  This way I can use the tag as a bookmark or leave it attached with my paperclip.  The verse is from Jeremiah 1:5.  Isn't it wonderful to know that our God knows us so well that he even knew us before we were formed in our mother's womb?  I can be truly myself with God because he knows ME, he knows my faults, my dreams, when I lie to other or myself.  He knows it all.  How many people do you know that you can truly be yourself with?

Thanks for visiting.  Please leave a comment if you would.  I would love to hear from you.

Decorating the Edges

I worked on the edges of my journaling Bible this week.  I have both ends decorated now.  I still haven't decided what to do with the side.

I also finished a my crown of thorns with nail for Matthew.

Thanks for stopping by.

Bible Art Journaling

Sunday at church service, the message was taken from John 4:24 "God is spirit; and they that worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth".  A picture of the boy with head bowed in prayer was on our church bulletin.  I loved it and thought it said what I wanted to say about the verse and so I drew it in my Bible and colored it with watercolors.

Documented Life Project-Catching Up

With a virus being shared within the family for the last few weeks and trying to take care of a sick 16
month old granddaughter, I have not been able to keep up with the Documented Life Project challenges.  I am almost caught up, with just this week's challenge left to do.  So I am sharing what have thus far.

February 28

Art Challenge: Using at Least Five Layers

Journal Prompt: Give Me a High Five

I put gesso down on my blank page. Then dripped and dropped several colors of inks allowing them to run down the page. Then I made a sandwich of 5 different papers using a couple of magazine pictures, an article out of another magazine and a tag from a piece of clothing that I liked. On top of it all I put a piece of card stock that had "5 FOR" printed on it and stitched the whole thing together then glued it to the page. I really like how this turned out although it is so totally different from anything I have ever done before.

The theme for March is:

Making Your Mark (Doodles & Mark Making)

Art Challenge: As A Layer Element

Journal Prompt: Surviving the Elements

I have a Gelli plate that I have been too afraid to use simply because I don't really know how. I recently got a great book from Amazon so that I feel a bit more comfortable with it.

Feeling a bit more confident I used my Gelli plate which is a small 6 x 6 to make the background on this page. I put the paint on it and I used two different stencils to put down the base colors. Then I just stamped the page with it like a stamp.   I doodled around several of the elements with both black and white pens and pencils.  I wrote the words "I will survive".

The last page I finished is the March 8th challenge.

Art Challenge: Borders

Journal Prompt: "Borderline feels like I'm going to lose my mind."

For this page I wanted to do something different. So I started by doodling some borders and corners on my page. Then I worked some Zenspiration dangles into the middle area. I colored these in with my Pitt Pens. Using water color I added color around the border. Then I wrote in the prompt.

I really like how it turned out and it was so much fun doodling the dangles.

Prayer Flag

I made a prayer flag for my Secret Sister this weekend.  I watched a series of video classes from Gail Schmidt from Shabby Cottage Studio on how to make these. It looked like a lot of fun so here is the one I made.  It was really easy and fun and turned out great.

If it looks like something you would like to look into head over to Gail's website and click on Online Classes.  Find the class for Prayer Flags and register.  Like I said it was free.

Thanks for stopping.

Mail Art

I just recently was involved in an art tag swap.  I wanted to share the envelope I created to send the tag and goodies to my swap partner.  I can't believe I didn't take a picture of the actual tag before I sent it.

This is a regular manila envelope that I gessoed, painted, stamped and layered with papers.  I love how it turned out.  I hope my swap partner enjoys it as much as the tag and goodies that are in it.

Thanks for stopping.

Artful Weekend

Since the weather wasn't very good this weekend I decided to play with my art supplies.  I received my book Mixed Media Portraits with Pam Carriker. I have never been able to draw faces.

I did the first two exercises in the book with her face mapping.

First was a straight on view.

I was pretty happy with my pencil drawing for the first ever actual face that looks like a face.

Next was a side view.

I'm not quite as happy with this one although it isn't too bad for a first time.

Last was the 3/4 view.

I liked this one because it seems a bit more feminine.  Now I just have to learn how to do the faces with some hair since they are all quite bald.

I also did a few Bible journaling images.

And this is the one for the Bible Art Journal Challenge from Rebekah Jones.
We are into Week 9 and the verse is from Matthew 18:3. "Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children you will not enter the kingdom of heaven."

I found this image of a girl with a balloon on google images.

And here is my version in my journaling Bible.

And last but not least I caught up on the February 21st challenge at DLP, Repeating Elements.
The monthly theme is Layers but I didn't really get much layering onto this page.  However, I really like how it turned out.  My repeating elements are the hearts.

Well, that's it.  Glad you stopped by.
